Latvian Association of kidney patients is founded in 1994 and unites 151 members. The audience of the association are kidney patients, their relatives, friends, and medical professionals.
- to promote activities preventing kidney diseases and favour patient education health care and treatment;
- to organize help and protection of kidney patients, especially end stage renal disease patients requiring kidney replacement therapy( hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation);
- to raise public awareness of questions related to different kidney diseases;
- to pay attention of society, governmental, municipal institutions, nongovernmental organizations and other structures to issues linked to kidney diseases problem solving at national and international level;
- to participate in developing national programme of kidney disease prevention measures and treatment;
- to facilitate and support events improving medical care for kidney patients;
- to carry out the exploration and perform surveys, cooperate with and enable contacts with other similar organizations and individuals in Latvia and in the world.
LNSA was founded in 1994 and unites 153 members.
From 1998 LNSA is member of CEAPIR (European Kidney Patients Federation)
LNSA organizes Patients Day regularly and produces brochures, organizes seminars, where kidney patients can receive not only medical, but also social and juridical information
In future it is planned to make branches in all the other regions of Latvia. There has been the forerun made to create the Liepāja branch of Latvian Association of Kidney Patients.
The general supporters and cooperation partners are Latvian Kidney Foundation- in preparation of informative materials for kidney patients; SUSTENTO – supports financially and has helped to create support centre Līdzīgs Līdzīgam (Alike to alike) for kidney patients. In organization of different activities financially supports Gambro, Roche, Baltic Dialyse Centre, Riga Municipality, Daugavpils Municipality, Ltd Daugapils Regional Hospital, LTD SAGITUS, JANSSEN- SILLAG, BAXTER.
In 2003 one of the biggest successes of LNSA is achieving inclusion of hemodialysis process in emergency help list in cooperation with Association of Nephrologists hence the hemodialysis is for free in Latvia.
In 2004 LNSA Daugavpils Branch was formed which is responsible for kidney patients in Latgale region. It works in newly established Daugavpils Disabled people council.
In 2005 we were engaged in CEAPIR research. The survey of patients on dialysis was conveyed in Riga, Liepaja and Daugavpils.
In 2006 two youth representatives of LNSA from Liepaja and Daugavpils took part in Nordic countries Kidney patients’ organizations conference, where they got valuable experience which can be used to organize youth group in Latvia. The work with children and youth is very important and there will be more attention paid to this issue in future.
In 2006 there was made the support centre “Līdzīgs Līdzīgam” in Riga in LNSA main office where disabled person who could accept changes connected with disability works. He/ her is specially trained and prepared to communicate with people and provides information from his/her own experience, how to solve problem, where to get help.
In 2007 the project within Leonardo Da Vinci programme was realized. The exchange program with Bulgaria was carried out in order to promote the employment and competitiveness of kidney patients not only in Latvia, but also in other EU countries.
From 2007 July 1 in cooperation with Association of Nephrologists we have managed to achieve that after the hemodialysis procedures patients can have meals for free.
Currently involving Ministry of Wealth and DEĀK (Medical Commission of Workability) is raised question about inclusion of patients on hemodialysis in DEĀK list in order to be able to receive transport compensation allowance to get to the hemodialysis procedures while this question is not solved at governmental level in cooperation with municipalities different temporally solutions have been made.
